Penyffordd an Embarrassment to Democracy

Alternative Title: Penyffordd the New Zimbabwe

Tom Jones fans may want to look away now.

One year ago Tom Jones decided he would be chairman of Penyffordd Community Council AFTER the elections in May 2012.

He will also control Penyffordd Council through his cronies.

It will make no difference how the 2000 residents of Penyffordd vote on May 3rd.

Tom Jones Independents' Sheet of 8 smother the democratic process to Tom's own ends.

This time seven out of the eight of Tom's cronies are guaranteed a councillor position and so a natural majority.
Many of them will have done nothing at all towards their effort to become a councillor.
They just sit at home no effort required.

This means no doctors within a village of over 3000 people. Little investment in youth facilities. No grant money for places such as the Penyffordd Institute.

His sheet of 8 is a disaster for Penyffordd.

copied to Carl Sargeant AM Local Government Minister for Wales.

postscript: If you stand as a true independent your election costs are over £150 plus 4 days of delivering leaflets.

Tom Crony efforts are near zero. That's why you end up with dead heads on the council.

* David Williams is standing as an Independent. As far as I know he has nothing to do with Tom Jones' Independents which they should be named as on a election literature because they are all beholden to Tom's shilling.

Those who think different might ask themeselves why I'm not invited to stand as a Tom crony. It's because I have a few brain cells and a differing point of view.

  2. I don't know Cllr. Jones personally. Cliques in villages do nothing to help the Community, they tend to be devisive. I think its time we had younger Cllr's both at Community and County level.
The day of the dinosaur-I am going on forever-type of Councillor is past. If Cllr. Jones really cares about Penyffordd, he needs to let go of the reins and allow new blood, younger candidates with fresh ideas to come forward.
As it is now, the bunch we have standing will go on forever in his shadow, doing things his way, not wanting to rock the boat and suffer his wrath.
A new Clerk to the Council would be preferable, the one we have tends to be full of his own importance, not very approachable.

    1. Cllr Tom Jones is 85 years old. One of his cronies for nomination gets mixed up half way through meetings if he is not too unwell to attend. He brings up items that were sorted 6 months previous. His only function is that of a blocker. This person represents the sickness of Penyffordd Community Council.

You mention the Clerk. He gets very prickly about being mentioned on here. He has internet but refuses to have an email address for the council. If you ring him up he's usually out. You are asked to call back.
He's supposed to be neutral with regards village politics

    2. David Williams is a step in the right direction. He stuck to his guns over affordable housing on the White Lion development whilst being out numbered 9 to 1.

He has procured more allotments. He will stand up to Flintshire planners.

We need more like David Williams.

    4. Tom Jones was paid off to stop being a county councillor. It should have included community council as well.

Perhaps we would have had a few doctors in the village and more sports facilities for youth. The problem with Tom is he's quite happy for all resources to be out of the village. Tom hooked onto outsourcing before it became trendy.

Our OAP's don't mind getting on the bus to their doctors in Hope, Buckley and Broughton. As some critic says, he's good man, but only if you have a car !

    5. Your misleading comments ar mind blowing.
Why do you not try telling the truth just for once.
Mr Nigel jones is anative of the Penyffordd area, he cares about this village.
He is highly regarded throughout Flintshire.he is the best and most experienced Clerk in Flintshire and beyond.
He is approachable at all times. He is a very Busy man, being Clerk of Penyffordd, Clerk of Flint Town council, Clerk of Leeswood Community Council, who is admired by all who come into contact with him---------How dare you malign an honourable, trusted servant of a large diverse population.

      May be that's the problem.

No excuse for not having an email address he has internet.

No excuse for Penyffordd Community Council, (sorry I mean Tom) not telling him he has to have one.

    7. Your continuous attacks upon Cller Tom Jones are misleading new Residents to Penyffordd Community Area. They are completely without foundation, he is a man whom we trust and have trusted over many years. He has kept faith with the People of Penyffordd and we will remain faithful and true to him now.
With reference to his arranging the chairmanship, that is simply not true, he was elected Vice-Chairman by the unanimous vote of the entire Council( "You Stupid Boy").

Your ignorance of how the Community Council works is quite frightening.
The Council has very limited powers.
Mostly it's work is by way of representation to other bodies which sometimes take notice and timesothers not.
Take planning, the Council does not have power to approve or not. The decision lies with the County Planning Authority which is subject to appeal to the welsh Government.
The Community Council has no power whatsoever in arranging where a Doctors practice shall be.
That is a matter between the Doctors and the Health Board, important to know that Doctors are Independent Contractors.
Cllr Tom jones was not paid off to stop him being a County Councillor, he was paid a sum when he retired which is quite different. There is no law which limits the age when one can offer oneself for election, the matter is in the hands of decent people to determine.
You are right about Cllr David Williams, he is a very effective Councillor, who tries very hard for our Community, and will do even better during the next four or five years.
      My final point.
I think it is highly commendable that all the other Candidates have refrained from being drawn into this unpleasant correspondence on your "Blog"
This modern techknology could have been used for more constructive purposes.

    8. Considering Anonymous (Apr 23, 2012 06:53 AM) doesn't know Cllr. Jones personally you seem to have a very negative and strong opinions of the Councillor. Maybe for readers of the blog you could give some hard facts on why this man is not fit to be re elected or do you wish to continue living in cloud cuckoo land (not another cuckoo sure i saw one on penymynydd road the other day). Seriously I think you people should stick to facts rather than this constant character assassination of certain individuals in the village.
As for Nigel I have always found him to be a very approachable, friendly and pleasant man maybe you are talking about a different Nigel or maybe it you that is not approachable!

    9. Certainly. He's too old, far too set in his ways and obviously does not like change of any kind unless he approves of it. Is it too much to ask that we have new blood, new ideas, a fresh view? Nothing in life remains the same we all have to move on, so why not the Community Council? I would like to add that it is called Community Council not Tom Jones Council!

    10. Agreed, there is no law that limits the age one can still stand for election. It should be a matter of decency for the Cllr. concerned. Cllr.David Williams has drive and integrity, he would make an excellent Chairman.

  4. 'He is a very Busy man, being Clerk of Penyffordd, Clerk of Flint Town council, Clerk of Leeswood Community Council,'
That is an awful lot of postions for one man to hold, would have thought that was a conflict of interest????

  5. And if its not, it should be because he can't have much of a home life!

  6. And where is this new blood? Only 11 candidates for 10 seats - it strikes me that no-one else is interested! Better to have an experienced councillor who wants to be there than nobody at all!
Even the ones who are standing haven't all sent out their election addresses yet. How are those with postal votes supposed to make an informed decision?
On the subject of community council grants you are contradicting yourself - one minute you complain about lack of youth facilities and the next you complain that a group of wine drinkers didn't get a grant. In my opinion all grants should go to children's and youth's activities, not adult's social gatherings. Adults can fund their own hobbies, whether they involve alcohol or not.
Finally, please stop this character assassination - it is not the way to win votes!

    1. Only 11 candidates for 10 seats speaks volumes. It smacks of a clique who have the Community Council well sewn up, thus no new faces would be welcome or tolerated. Character assassination it is not. We are all entitled to our opinions and these people have put themselves up for Public Office, they are in the public domain. If they cannot endure the criticism then they know what to do.
Basically, they are big men behind closed doors but they lack the moral fibre to come on here and have a frank discussion, they prefer to hide and let their cronies bleat for them.

  7. What rubbish! The electorate make their choice from those on offer and then the elected council make their decisions - it's called democracy. Just because you don't agree with them doesn't make it wrong.
Why should the candidates have to come on one man's blog to defend themselves? Canvassing is done on the doorstep.
