Antiques Road Show comes to Penyffordd

or I wish it would. Here is a fly door knocker made out of cast iron or steel. It has been cast. Has three different paint colours. The underside including the legs are painted black. The paint looks pretty tough could be stove enameled? It's about 5 inches long. The wings are used as the door knocker mechanism.

Unusual Traffic Calming Method

because the police have given up on Flintshire communities courtesy of our politicians. A community reduced to gimmicks.

More Mushrooms

Found this during the walk today along with a good soaking from a shower. It's called Fly Agaric it was used by Russian noble men instead of vodka or whatever. Not recommended unless you know what you are doing. No I have not tried it. The Carlos Castaneda books cover this subject plus a few others. The books can be read as fiction. They are about men of Knowledge in Mexico an alternative view of the universe.

This is depressing for local democracy. The newspapers themselves and or their websites need to survive so that local issues can be fully discussed. I am of the opinion that newspaper websites do not make much profit.

The Chronicle

Have you ever tried to find the letters page in The Chronicle. It takes about 5 minutes. Today I have made the letters page. More later.

Snouts in the trough continued

So our government stood by whilst the city bet our country in a card game and lost. Then Mp's were caught fiddling their expenses (very small beer compared to former). Now it seems they have been handing out more of OUR money to civil servants and ramping up their own pensions whilst our schemes fall through the floor. ( courtesy of Gordon Brown)

"Deputy Prime Minister without Portfolio (or Party) Nick
Clegg said six weeks ago:
Private sector workers have already seen final salary schemes close, while returns from defined contribution schemes fall. So can we really ask them to keep paying their taxes into unreformed gold-plated public sector pension pots? It's not just unfair; it's not affordable."

Banks

I used to have a business account in Hawarden. I ran it by the seat of my pants expanding business with what ever was available ( credit cards were still to come ). It got to the stage where the manager wanted the banks money back so I would get phone calls most days to say money was needed for the account. The sound of the old fashioned dring dring phones still still causes me to pause. I finally had enough money to clear the loan and I foolishly let the bank manager know. Next day he was around knocking on the door wanting his cheque.

Times change my problem was a bit of over trading. Current banking problems remain. We the tax payer will be paying for these idiots for the forseable future. The Slog reveals that Barclay's Italian sovereign debt stood at £790 million during the recent stress tests designed to test the banks robustness. Two months later the debt has strangely gone up to £8.6 Billion -- Crooks! They are all in it together banks and government. No more boom and bust said the man. lol

Found these growing near the greenhouse in wood chippings from the shredder. They look for all the world like mushrooms but mushrooms grow in fields in grass. There was a party of fungi gatherers who went to Scotland. They ate a toadstool and became very ill. I think they are still on kidney dialysis machines and will continue to be. They are not that sure what they ate.

Good Game

So we are going across a hill in a field near Nant Y Ffrith when a dozen large bullocks come running at us. We have the English bull terriers on leads with us. Do we run or do we stand our ground? The standard advice at the moment is to let your dog off the lead to fend for itself should there be trouble. As there also 20 sheep in the field this would be pure folly. One of ours would chase the bulls around then when he got tired attack a sheep or three. One has to be pragmatic. I see the dog's reactions when confronted by sheep that's why he is never allowed off the lead in sheep country or almost anywhere as his recall ability depends on what's happening.

So off we go across the hilltop running with dogs on leads with a dozen bullocks in chase 50 yards behind us. I see a chance to put some space between us and the bulls by going around a shallow ravine that can't be crossed. This is good enough to stop the bulls and they watch us walk away from the top of the hill. Last year there were atleast 5 people killed by cattle in UK. It would be fair however to say that the young cattle were just up for some fun, the dogs however have far more deadly intentions. A kick in head by a bull is not to be taken lightly, the dogs are however fearless

On a legal point a field with cattle and footpaths in is the responsibility of the farmer. Last year a farmer was found against where a woman was brain damaged by cattle when walking along a footpath.

Police back the use of speed cameras

in Walesonline.

The Government are kow towing to the speed lobby. This will cost lives. The amount of idiots who have car licences is legion

Moz1 wrote:
Of course speed causes accidents, if you go too fast you have less time to react to something. Also, the speed you are going greatly increases the chance of someone being killed, if you are hit by someone going at thirty you are likely to die if hit by someone at twenty - you'll probably live. Being hit by cars is the biggest cause of death of children in the UK - that's right it really is. Lets get sensible about speed and stop pandering to the idiots who think the road was put there for them to drive like lunatics and who then complain because the police enforce the LAW. If you don't like it, vote for an MP who will change it, but first go and see the family of a child killed by a speeding motorist and tell me that speed doesn't matter.

Quote from above puts it succinctly
"
Johnny Chatterton, the digital campaigns manager for 38 Degrees, had asked the MP to clarify that he did not want constituents to be able to contact him "quickly and easily".
Chatterton said: "It appears that you are asking to be removed from a system that quickly and easily allows your constituents to get in touch with you about issues they care about.
"You mentioned complaining to the information commissioner. As an MP you are paid, with taxpayers' money, to represent your constituents, and we believe that as your parliamentary email address is in the public domain it's legitimate to use it to facilitate your constituents getting in touch with you. We have been in touch with the information commissioner to confirm this.
"Before the election, when you were still a candidate, you were happy to encourage people to email you and provided an email address for us to use – I expect some of your constituents would be disappointed if it was the case that you were less happy to be contacted now you have been elected."

How they are run and how they used to be run on the Walesonline site

Retiring Police Chief tells it as it is

In an interview in today's Daily Telegraph, the outgoing Cambridgeshire police chief said: 'Driving without care or consideration for other road users is probably among the worst kind of antisocial behaviour in its truest sense, because serious offenders can, and do, kill.'

It's across the spectrum though from 17 to 70 across all the social classes. There is also the issue of environment which is not mentioned by and large. More speed more noise.

Saving Flintshire Council money

Get rid of Chief Executive Colin Everett and make Cllr Arnold Woolley Chief Executive as well as Leader of the Council. Pay Arnold an extra £40,000 saving the council and us long suffering ratepayers £100,000 per year.

Penyffordd Businesses affected by Warren Bank divert to Dobshill

The village is relatively quiet at the moment. School holidays, the credit crunch and the Warren Bank divert. This suits me but I don't run a business in the village. Quite some time ago Cllr Tony Sharps told Northop Hall community that they needed to use their shops or they would lose them. The same applies to Penyffordd. Councillors should be encouraging residents to use local busineses or our nearest shops will be Buckley or Broughton Retail Park.

Decline of Law and Order

Comment Quote by Spiral Architect on Thaddeus J Wilson's Decline of law and Order

The police is run by politicians – in Westminster, in council chambers and in the headquarters of the various forces.
As we all know – whilst feigning altruism (and efficiency), politicians have only their own interests at heart………both financial and ideological.
The end result is that nothing of any value ever gets done, the lives of decent, law-abiding people become blighted and criminals and yobboes have licence to operate with impunity.
The public is being ripped off and let down, it’s time to act.
How did it come to this?……………….(he asked rhetorically).

Police, Government and Statistics

"The fall in serious crime is a fiction as far as I'm concerned. It changed in nature, and it didn't get detected anything like as much as previously.....and of course, middle ranks came under pressure to 'change' the definitions."

The former detective is referring to credit card, identity and internet crime. He goes on:

"It was unbelievable. There we were in an electronic crime wave, and the rug gets pulled out from under the SFO [Serious Fraud Office]. It was a case of 'we can't solve it, so lets make it disappear'. I took early retirement after that. The dishonesty was sickening."
