A days holiday today for Penyffordd school teachers

Teachers start off at £22k and I presume if you've been there a while its £30k a year

There are many people on minimum wage and zero contract hours.

Teacher and Firebrigade leaders are taking the piss.

postscript. I think the government are trying to trim firebrigade pensions which are very adequate.
Never understood why I should contribute to public sector pensions.
I could never afford one.

The action is also political. More of this to come before the election

  1. I've been a teacher for over 27 years - I pay in 12% of my salary into my pension every month - my employer - the government - pays in 9%. My pension stands to be around £17000 a year - not bad, not gold plated either. I also am a tax payer and pay for things I don't agree with - nuclear weapons for example. The point about teacher pensions - is that all the contributions that every teacher makes every month - goes into the general government revenue pot, not into a defined scheme or separate pension pot. The pensions that the government then pay out every month to retired teachers - comes out of the general government pot. They have always refused to have a defined scheme that would fund itself - unofficial estimates are that the amount teachers pay in every month in contributions greatly outweighs the liabilities, both current and future. So if a separate pension fund was set up - it would be self financing and probably earn the exchequer some money - but the govt refuse to do so. So for the teacher pensions (not speaking about other public sector workers), the pension contribution increases that the govt have imposed and the worsening of conditions - work longer to qualify etc - is nothing more than a tax grab. oh yeh, add in 0% wage increases (compared to MP increases of 6%) are we really all in it together? Don't get me wrong - its not a bad pension deal and its guaranteed - but to say they are gold plated is frankly rubbish....and I pay towards it, myself my own pension and if you can read this....thank a teacher!

    2. agrees...the real gold plated public pensions are ..police, fire fighters, armed forces and whitehall civil servants....who can all pick up final salary pensions at age 50 or 55. Teachers have to wait to 60 -and that is rising.....but the government is not so keen to trim back those pensions....so other public sector pensions get hit. When i became a teacher, my pension would have been (based on 40 year career) £20,000....now the Govt has re-written my contract....i'll have towork longer, pay more for it (9% up to 11%) and get a THIRD less in pension......who wouldn't complain!!!

    3. Again thank you for your very detailed information. Yes you are very right. Whitehall civil servants increased their own compensation greatly without the permission of parliament. All MP's kept very quiet about this.
Private sector pays for all your pensions. The private sector has suffered greatly since 2008. No private sector, no pensions for you.

  2. Quite frankly - bearing in mind the yobs we see around the village - would you want to teach a class of 30 of them - day in day out.

Or i suppose you think that because they are yobs that that is the teachers fault as well.

good luck to them, about time someone stood up to this government

    1. Yes you are right. I do not have the necessary skills to deal with school children. Nor do I want them. None of this is helped by lack of discipline. Not the teachers fault

    1. A firemans job is not easy. Mostly boredom and then possibly intense danger. Not an easy job. There are sights that fireman see and involved in that can upset people for life. What does a fireman get paid and what are his pension benefits?

  4. i see the government is going to pass a law to outlaw strike action unless at least 50% of the members take part in the vote.....would that count the same for electing our MP's.........many get elected on a lot less than 50% of the voters in a constituency and that includes Gove and Cameron...

  5. are you really suggesting that £30,000 a year is too much to teach - walk in someone else's shoes before you comment...come and spend a week...a day at my comprehensive and tell me its too much!

    1. You are right but many people earn much less than half of the above figure.

    2. .....and many many more earn far in excess...without the personal investment that teachers make - A-levels, a degree, a PGCE and an NQT year. The labour market isn't fair.....but to castigate public sector workers......when we remember the excesses of the private sector. When i came into teaching i remember my peers who went into industry and finance laughing at my pension promise - but it was guaranteed and i loved my job...now that the stock market is not as vibrant as it was...those private pensions are now not looking so good....and now hear my mates howl at gold plated public pensions!!

    3. As I said above. Private sector pays for all your pensions.
Many jobs have disappeared or downsized to part time. The private sector has suffered greatly since 2008. No private sector, no pensions for you. The golden egg is starting to stink.

  6. surely we need to attract the best graduates to educate our future - we're going to need more doctors and nurses and engineers, not less...education should be our number one investment target...go and look at crumbling schools, lack of basic equipment - experiments that can't be done because schools cannot afford to buy equipment or materials...what a joke

    1. I agree with you whole heartedly. I think teacher quality has suffered. I base this on what I read. To pay for more teachers, doctors and nurses we need more engineers. Engineering companies. Companies that can export to countries such as China and India. RollRoyce, Airbus outstanding examples We need people who can become experts in such new sciences as nanotechnology and make businesses..
The problem being this country currently owes more money than any time in its history. People work long hours, grand parents are roped in to baby sit and take kids to school.
The grand plan was for robots to do most of the work whilst we have more time off. Big business just want more money. Our democracy needs to be for the people not greedy big business. How you elect a government that puts people before big business?

    2. This Is the big conundrum. Problem is lots of voters have got no idea and neither do our main parties

    3. Further - I recently spent two weeks in the Maelor. I found the nurses were heroic. Their hours ( 12.5 hours) awful.

    4. "teacher quality is suffering - I base this on what I read".......unbelievable,,,,,,come and have a go...or just observe.....then pass comment. It's like saying all bloggers are bigoted idiots....based on what I read!

    5. I make the above comment. Its my opinion. Your argument doesn't hold water, blogs have nothing to do with it. Blogs are usually in the lead over the MSM. I wouldn't be a teacher in a million years. You have two hands tied behind your with regards pupil discipline. With Google I am master of the world data. Here's the BBC talking pants http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-25187997 Of course the bearer or the information you will hate. I disagree with all the tests that add many hours to a teachers working week. Just look at the police. Ring them up over an issue and they've got 5 reasons why it shouldn't be taken any further. It keeps crime stats down

  7. Here's a public "service" that needs trimming. One car for every two employees. I presume this is the English side http://www.insidetheenvironmentagency.co.uk/
