Penyffordd Railway Station

Courtesy of Howell ( J H) Hughes of Penyffordd.

Howell is 88 years old and still fully active. He has lived in Penyffordd all his life. His grandfather was the late J P Griffiths who died in 1939 and was for many years the local reporter for the Chester Chronicle.

  1. Is there enough pics and info to produce a small book, proceeds to charity maybe?

  2. Good point. There is a book about Penyffordd.
    ISBN 1844940004
    Publisher: Bridge Books, 2003

Only one available in online bookshops currently in Canada.

There is talk of reprinting. The publisher is in Wrexham. I think some of the pictures Howell gave me are in the book. I am a bookseller. We have sold this book three times.

Whilst I would help with any effort I would prefer not to be an instigator. My current list of work stretches in years ahead of me. lol

  4. My great uncle, Harry Jones, was stationmaster at Penyffordd for many years. I never knew him - do you know where I could find out more about this relative and his work, please?

    Thanks

  5. Hi Mike
There is a book published about Penyffordd.
I haven't got a copy at the moment.
Not sure if Harry is in it.
Howell who supplied the above photos is 88 years old. He supplied a lot of the information in the Penyffordd book.
Next time I see Howell I will enquire for you.
Or I can pass a message on to home from you.

  6. Hi Colin

I'd really appreciate that. I guess that Howell is the right age to have known my great uncle, and I'd be grateful for anything at all that he can tell me about him.

I know his wife was called Doll (probably Dorothy) and they had a daughter called Dorothy. Dorothy would probably have been born in the 1930's. She apparently married a farmer from Soughton and I'd be really keen to get in touch with anyone from that side of the family, if this rings any bells at all.

Brilliant blog, by the way. I don't know Penyffordd at all, but I've been laughing my head off at some of the posts, and imagining the stories behind them.

    All the best

    Mike
